Avast! This really is a treasure trove of pirate fancy dress costumes. We’ve everything from pirate wigs to parrots, eye patches, and of course the Jolly Roger! Everyone loves to be the baddie sometimes, but if you’re going to do it, you need to do it right - with a full on fancy dress outfit and accessories!
The most popular pirate of recent years has to be Captain Jack Sparrow, famously modelled on Keith Richards. The first thing you need in order to pass off as Captain Jack is… to be hideously drunk on rum, of course. Then there’s the beard, the hair, the hat, the bandana, the generally grubby look… and all of that before you’ve even started on the clothes!
Before Captain Jack Sparrow came along, the most famous pirate was probably Blackbeard, otherwise known as Edward Teach. Unlike Sparrow, who was a fictional invention for a Disney movie, Teach was a real life pirate in the 18th century around the West Indies. He used to tie lit fuses under his hat in order to scare people. He relied on his fearsome image to scare people into giving up their bounty, instead of using force - there’s actually no account of his ever harming or murdering the people he held captive.
We have a wide range of sexy pirate outfits for the ladies too, including a mystic gypsy and even a glamorous glitzy pirate. And if you’re looking for something a little more scary, why not go as a zombie pirate!
These days a lot of children love pirates too, especially with the new TV show Swashbuckle! Kids are eager to get their eye patch and do their Swashbuckle Salute. Ah-harrrrrr! Don’t worry; everything they could possibly want for fancy dress can be found here.
It’s very important to take pirate fancy dress very seriously! You need to get into character. One very important point about being a pirate: you need to be able to talk like one! Here are a few key phrases to get you started:
Ahoy mateys! - hello, friends.
Grog - alcoholic beverage
Land lubber - a non-sailor (obviously not to be trusted)
Bilge! - nonsense
Yo-ho-ho - er… it means yo-ho-ho. But it’s very important pirate speak!
It’s very important to be fully into the part when dressing as a pirate so we would suggest watching back-to-back episodes of Captain Pugwash, Swashbuckle, and of course, the Pirates of the Carribean box set. All very important, high-brow research viewing, we think you’ll agree!
And most importantly - don’t forget International Talk Like a Pirate Day on September 19th! Arrrr!
