The famous mask which we have all come to associate with the character was designed by Ralph McQuarrie, but it was only intended to be part of a space suit, not worn at all times! The rest of the costume became designed by Brian Muir who based the outfit upon the mask.
The original script in which the “Luke, I am your father” line was delivered very nearly didn’t happen. The Empire Strikes Back was co-written with Lucas by Leigh Brackett, who instead wrote into the script that Luke’s father would appear to him in a vision.
However, Lucas was dissatisfied with parts of the script (including this part) but Brackett sadly died before the script could be discussed. This left Lucas free to re-draft the script to include many changes, including this famous scene.
There have been many actors who portrayed the character, though bodybuilder David Prowse was chosen to fill out the costume for the original Star Wars trilogy. The famous lightsaber fights of The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi saw stunt performer Bob Anderson take on the role. Many of us would recognise Sebastian Shaw as the true face of Darth Vader, as it was his job to portray the original unmasking of the villain.
