Yarrr! It’s International Talk like a Pirate Day!

Posted on September 19, 2013 by admin

Ahoy there mateys!

September 19th is International Talk like a Pirate Day – a whole day that you can dedicate to talking, dressing, partying and generally acting like a pirate.

If you’ve planned your own pirate themed party, you might be wondering what sort of pirate-look you might be able to pull off. You could be go for full captain’s costume or keep it simple with an eye patch or brandish a pistol!

Even if you haven’t recruited a crew of friends to don an eye patches, tri-corn hats and hobble like they’ve got a peg-leg to come over and swill grog at a nautical themed party, there are still plenty of other things you can do to honour this swashbucklingly good day.

It was during a friendly game of racquetball when two friends inexplicably started using pirate slang as a form of encouragement that International Talk like a Pirate Day was born. Having discovered that the use of pirate chat had made the game much more fun to play, the two friends decided that more people should discover the joy of talking like a pirate. And so Talk like a Pirate Day was born!

Since then, September 19th has become the official day for pirate enthusiasts across the globe to show their love for all things pirate with many raising money for charities. To find out more about how International Talk Like A Pirate Day got started, and what pirate shenanigans are taking place for 2013, why not head over to the official website or ‘Like’ the International Talk Like A Pirate Day Facebook page?

Speaking (like a pirate – y’argh!) of Facebook, why not share a piratey Facebook status? If you’re not confident that your pirate-speak is 100% piratey then worry not me hearties, there’s always the guide on How To Be Speakin’ Pirate-Like on the Talk Like A Pirate Day Official British HQ to help you.

Alternatively, you can honour International Talk Like A Pirate Day by changing your Facebook language to English (Pirate).

There’s also a lot of pirate talk on Twitter:

John McIntyre gives fair warning…

Clare Balding seems a bit confused by the whole thing!

Failing that, there’s always the option to greet people using the word “Ahoy!”, replace the word  “my” with “me” and most importantly exclaim “Y’aaaaaaargh!” at any minor inconvenience such as dropping something on the floor, missing the bus or running out of milk.

Whatever you choose to do this International Talk like a Pirate Day, be it shivering ye timbers or swabbing the deck, have a grog-swillingly good time!
