World Cup: The End is Nigh!

Screenshot 2014-07-08 at 14.24.44   England may have been knocked out yonks ago (in our worst World Cup performance for 58 years), but the Brazillian World Cup has still been a cracking event with all sorts of shenanigans going on. Why not celebrate the end of the World Cup (and the fact it’s almost time for the domestic season to start again) with a party? (You know what we’re like here at Fancy Dress Ball; any excuse for a party, especially if it involves fancy dress!) Meanwhile, here’s a look back at some of the most iconic moments of this World Cup:   Screenshot 2014-07-06 at 14.04.23   Probably the most memorable incident in this World Cup – and also the most Photoshopped and most committed to meme, is the Luis Suarez biting incident! During Uruguay’s World Cup group match against Italy, Suarez bit Giorgio Chiellini, and the Internet went wild! Our favourite was this one, because it’s so simple. Other fabulous ones include “If you can’t beat them, just eat them” and a Jurassic Park poster with Suarez’s superimposed on a T Rex! Screenshot 2014-07-06 at 14.22.41 Another big moment during the tournament was during the final minutes of Brazil’s match against Colombia. Neymar was kneed in the back by a Colombian player (who didn’t even receive a yellow card), and was taken off the pitch on a stretcher. Horrifyingly, Neymar’s third vertebra has apparently fractured, and although he won’t need surgery, he will be out of action for some time. Screenshot 2014-07-08 at 14.27.07 This goal from Dutch striker Robin Van Persie became a legend almost immediately. If this photo looks like he’s flying… that’s because he basically did fly! Daley Blind picked out Van Persie, who delivered this spectacular header to equalise in a match against Spain. Outstanding football that is hard to beat!   Screenshot 2014-07-08 at 14.33.59The first hat-trick of the World Cup went to Thomas Mueller of Germany in their Group G match against Portugal at Arena Fonte Nova just four days into the competition. Germany won the match 4-0.

This is the moment Argentina’s manager Alejandro Sabella appears to have been so upset by Gonzalo Higuain’s strike bouncing off the crossbar, he pretended to faint… and went a little too far, careering backwards towards the dugout and almost losing his balance. Not quite the highlight of a game, but certainly one of the most bizarre moments of the tournament!

Another amusing moment was this line-up at the beginning of France’s quarter-final match against Germany. Someone at FIFA saw fit to pair the tallest mascot with France’s shortest player, the 5 foot 6 inch Mathieu Valbuena. Of course, this spawned hilarious head-swapping Photoshop incidents

So there we are, the end of the World Cup for another four years. Our national team may have performed less-than-perfectly, but at least there was plenty of other entertainment over the course of the tournament!
