Superman Day

Is it a bird?

Is it a plane?

No! It’s Superman… Day!

This Friday 12th June is Superman Day, a day to celebrate all things Clark Kent.

Superman was first created by Joe Shuster and Jerry Siegel in 1933. He was so successful that in 1939 he got his very own comic and since then, he’s gone from strength to strength with comic books, video games, several different movie incarnations, t shirts, stickers, costumes, novels, numerous TV shows and even Smallville, about Clark Kent’s life before he became Superman.

We think the best way to celebrate Superman Day is to dress up as Superman, of course! If you’re a big fan you could throw a Superman themed party, with a cake , Kryptonite bars (sponge cake with green food colouring), and of course a big trampoline so everyone can practise flying.

You could buy a Superman cake, but where’s the fun in that? Here’s a great tutorial (from good old You Tube!) to help you create your own Super masterpiece:

You could also make mini cupcakes with the Superman logo, and Kryptonite drinks for your friends (enemies?) with good old fashioned limeade or green colouring in lemonade.

The absolute most important part of your Superman party, though? A phone box so that Clark Kent can transform into his altarego and get the party started!

5 Great Fancy Dress Ideas For Your Suit

Stuck for fancy dress ideas? Don’t panic! If you’ve got a suit, we’ve got five great ideas for fancy dress costumes…

1. Clark KentClark Kent glasses
Obviously! Get some dark-rimmed specs, give yourself a side parting, and perfect your self-conscious, nervous stuttering. If you’re not surepeople will get it, put on a Superman costume under your shirt!

2. Zombie Office Worker
We love a good zombie fancy dress costume here. All you need is some fake blood and make up, and a really good zombie walk. The idea is to look like you’re undead, and walk like you’re… well, a zombie.

blues brothers3. The Blues Brothers
Who could forget Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi in the iconic movie? You’ll need a had and  some sunglasses… and a fantastic scowl and some amazing sideburns, of course.

4. A Gangster
Gangsters wear suits, right? Don Corleone is the most famous movie gangster, and he famously wore a suit with a bow tie and a red rose in the top pocket. For this one you’ll need some sponges to shove in the bottoms of your cheeks, and to practise saying everything in that low, husky voice. With your eyes half closed, of course! Kind of like a half-asleep Fonz.

5. James Bond
Suave, sophisticated, classic. James Bond is timeless and perfect. Accessorise with a fake gun, a watch you can talk into, and an Aston Martin. Oh, and a Martini – shaken, not stirred.

What’s your favourite suit-based fancy dress costume?

Superheroes vs. Supervillians Comments Off on Superheroes vs. Supervillians

It’s the 45th anniversary of the original Superman: The Movie this year and with the brand new Man of Steel set for release 13th June, it’s time to celebrate the all-American hero with a fancy dress party. The theme? Superheroes vs. Supervillians.

Anyone looking to fight for what is right will naturally want to take up superhero status. Just because Hollywood makes all the superheroes men, does not mean the ladies have to miss out!

Supergirl is a must for fans of the caped crusader, while Miss Captain America is perfect for any Avenger fans out there.

Of course there is always the original super lady in the form of Wonder Woman for anyone with the hair big enough to pull off the look.

Not all women are made of sugar and spice and everything nice, though, so for someone feeling a little naughty, the supervillian route is the only choice for them.

Ms Freddy Krueger is the stuff of nightmares, while the Wicked Witch might not look too scary, but a few choice words and it’s all over.

Just make sure Cruella de Ville isn’t let anywhere near the hot dogs – who knows what she’d do to them.

For men, Superman has always been the classic choice, even more so this year. If your mates already picked up the Superman look, though, it’s still possible to be part of the Justice League. Batman gets more women anyway and Green Lantern’s costume is maybe even cooler.

The Joker is the ultimate supervillian and a must for any faceoff between the do-gooders and the do-what-I-wanters. Michael Myers is perfect for anyone wanting to play the ‘silent mysterious’ type, or you can remind the girls that, actually, vampires don’t sparkle, they’re really terrifying. Sort of.

There are loads of superhero costumes to choose from, so let’s get to saving the world.
