Batman V Superman… It’s Coming! Comments Off on Batman V Superman… It’s Coming!

Batman Vs Superman

It’s the movie we’ve all been waiting for. Everyone loves a good superhero – so two in one film is almost too exciting! The movie is released later this week and we cannot wait. In celebration of what’s likely to be the movie event of the year (for us at least), we’ve been hunting down some fun facts about the movie…

  • Apparently Ben Affleck went to Christian Bale to ask him for advice playing Batman… unfortunately, Bale’s only advice involved ensuring he was able to go to the toilet whilst in costume!
  • When a rough cut of the movie was shown to Warner Bros executives they were so impressed they gave it a standing ovation, and immediately began negotiations to get Ben Affleck to sign for three more Batman movies!
  • Ben Affleck apparently asked if he could take the Batman suit home after the film wrapped. He was told yes, but it would cost him $100,000… he opted to have a photo taken with it instead!
  • This will be the first live action movie to feature Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman together. Excited? Us?
  • The film also includes The Flash, Aquaman and Cyborg
  • The Batman suit is made of cloth, removing all armour that has been in previous incarnations – they wanted it to be clear that this Batman’s power comes from his physical strength rather than armour and gadgets.
  • Batman and Superman have appeared together before; in 1952 they teamed up in Superman comic #72, when Bruce Wayne and Clark Kent shared a cabin on a cruise ship while attempting to catch a diamond thief and keep Lois Lane from guessing their identities.
  • Since 1943, Batman has been portrayed by eight actors in eleven live-action movies or serials. Superman has appeared in ten live-action movies, portrayed by only five actors.

Now, if you’ll excuse us, we’re about to embark on a Batman/Superman marathon – can we watch all eleven Batman movies and all ten Superman movies before the movie hits the cinema?

Twilight fancy dress

This time of year is prime season for fancy dress parties. People love to dress up in fancy dress, especially during the festive season.

So we thought it only right that we provide you with as many fancy dress ideas as possible!

Twilight is a massive series of movies (and books before that). Besides that, vampires have always been a winner for fancy dress – ever since Buffy the Vampire Slayer, then Angel and a whole host of other TV shows and movies made vampires the cool thing to be.

And obviously, with Twilight if you don’t want to be a glittery vampire, you can always be a werewolf! Or Bella before.. you know, we don’t want to have any spoilers in this post, so we’ll leave that one there!

Any way, with Twilight fancy dress there are basically three main options: werewolf, vampire or human…

Vampire

Strictly speaking, with Twilight you don’t need much of a costume to be one of the vampires – except maybe some glitter, if you’re going out in daylight hours! The vampires in Twilight look just like normal humans for a large part of the movies, except maybe a little pale, with bloodshot eyes.

But that’s no fun, is it?! What you want is fangs, fake blood, maybe some claws, perhaps some Victorian clothing like one of the Volturi.

In order to really get into the part of one of the vampires, you’ll need to perfect your brooding stare into the middle distance… Just try really hard to remember Pi to as many decimal places as you can and you’ll be fine!

Werewolf

If you’re more Team Jacob than Team Edward, then the werewolf costume is where you’re headed.

If you’re feeling particularly lazy, you can always dress as a werewolf pre-change – you just need a pair of jeans and a lumberjack shirt! That’s no fun, though is it! What you really want is fake hair coming out of the cuffs of your lumberjack shirt,  jeans ripped off at the knees (unevenly), super-hairy legs, bare feet, a fake wolf face with spittle hanging from the fangs, howling at the moon and declaring your wolfiness!

The good thing about being a full-on werewolf is that you don’t need to practise the brooding stare – because nobody can see your face! you can just bark.

(consider this fair warning – there is every chance you will be mistaken for Teen Wolf in this outfit, unless you choose to go in a furry onesie with no lumberjack shirt!)

Human

Er… This is basically the cop-out option, which we here at Fancy Dress Ball can never condone. We believe that if you’re going to do fancy dress, you should do fancy dress.

(though if you were feeling particularly snarky, you could go as Bella and just not change your facial expression for the entire evening)

Last week saw the end of this year’s award season with the 86th Academy Awards. If you’re planning a film –themed party to celebrate the winners (and the losers) or just need an excuse to dress up as your favourite character, we’ve got some great ideas to inspire you.

American Hustle

David O’Russell’s 70s flick American Hustle received a whopping 10 nominations at this year’s Academy Awards, yet sadly came away with nothing. But as the film that received the most nominations in 2014, there’s still every reason to dress up in your 70s get-up for your movie-based bash.

We love this great tutorial from Punk Chyaz, which shows you how to achieve a cool Jennifer Lawrence-inspired look from the film.

The Wolf of Wall Street

Martin Scorsese’s tale of 80s yuppie greed didn’t win any awards at this year’s Oscars, but as it’s one of the most talked about films this year, there’s every reason to reach for a massive mobile phone, slap on some khakis, a bright polo shirt and complete with a sweater over the shoulders. Don’t forget to slick back your hair and turn up your collar!

 The Great Gatsby

Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby came away with the award for best costume design, for its fresh and fabulous flapper outfits. If you’re going for a Great Gatsby themed ensemble, then this gorgeous hairstyle will really finish off your look.

Check out our BAFTAs special for more ideas on how to achieve and award winning 20s style!

And the rest…

If you’re going for something a little more fun with your costume why not dress in style and celebrate the film that swept the board at this year’s Oscars: Gravity.

Iron Man 3 was also in the list of this year’s nominees, so if you’ve always fancied yourself as playboy and entrepreneur Tony Stark, now’s your chance to become one of Marvel’s most well-loved superheroes!

And the rest#

Just for fun…

Star Trek: Into Darkness was also nominated for an award, but even if you don’t fancy sporting the Spock ears and blue sweater yourself, you might have a furry friend who’d love to be involved in your Oscar celebrations!
