2015- A Look Ahead

Happy new year! Did you have a good one? Are you returning to work today filled with resolutions and good intentions?

Well, we are too – and we’re really excited about all of the fantastic opportunities (excuses!) to dress up there are in 2015. We’re just itching to share a few with you…

January is Creativity Month – and what could be more creative than wearing fancy dress? On top of that, the 14th is National Dress Up Your Pet day, and it’s Winnie the Pooh Day on the 18th. And there you have three cast-iron excuses to get your fancy dress on!

Everyone knows that 14th February is Valentine’s Day… but did you know that the 2nd is both Hedgehog Day and Marmot Day? And on Friday the 13th, it’s Blame Someone Else Day. So you can legitimately turn up for work in fancy dress, and… blame someone else! Our favourite though, has to be the 16th, which is Do a Grouch a Favour Day. What better favour could you do to a grouch, than to dress up like Oscar the Grouch?!

March is Women’s History Month, so expect a lot of things going on to commemorate that. We’re sure if you put your mind to it, you can think of a woman from history to whom you could pay tribute!

If Women’s History Month is not your thing, then what about Dr Seuss Day on the 2nd? Even better, the 3rd is What If Cats And Dogs Had Opposable Thumbs Day – so you can re-use your Cat In The Hat costume, and save on cleaning bills! We know, we’re so helpful!

March really is a jam-packed month. On the 9th we have Barbie day, and following shortly afterwards on the 13th, it’s Ken Day! Why not go the whole hog, and dress up as both of them?

And if you don’t want to dress up for any of these days, then Poultry Day on the 19th is the day for you!

Aside from the fact April 1st is April Fool’s Day, when nothing is off limits, the 2nd is Children’s Book Day – why not dress as your favourite children’s book character? If that’s not appealing, the 4th is World Rat Day… imagine how many people you could freak out on your morning commute, if you did it in a rat costume!

March 11th is Barbershop Quartet Day. Do you have a candy-striped suit and straw hat somewhere at the back of your wardrobe? If that’s not your thing, the 17th is Nothing Like a Dame Day… so dust off that purple wig and the ridiculous heels!

Not feeling inspired? The 23rd is World Book Night, when books are celebrated everywhere. Who’s your favourite literary character?

Ooh, May’s going to be a good one! It’s Batman Day on the 1st! Who doesn’t want to dress up as Batman? Here’s your cast iron excuse to do so. If ghosts and ghouls are more your thing, the 3rd is Paranormal Day.

Of course, the one day in May everyone knows about is Star Wars Day – May the 4th Be With You!

Also, you should probably be aware that the 13th is Leprechaun Day. Keep an eye out for little ginger fellas in bright green suits… or just dress up as one yourself!

Wow, June is like a bumper month for fancy dress enthusiasts! The 9th is Donald Duck Day (though you might want to avoid dressing up as him in public – he never wears trousers!). Then on the 12th, we have Superman Day – another underwear issue, but easier to deal with. On the 19th it’s Garfield the Cat Day, so you can dress as a ginger cat and eat lasagne all day! And finally, the 25th is Global Beatles Day. The possibilities with this one are endless: you could go with early Beatles, with their trademark hair and suits, or the hippie Beatles, with the round spectacles, long hair and free love, man. Then there’s Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, or the outfits from the Magical Mystery Tour… half the work is in deciding which era to choose!

We’ll be back on Wednesday with Part 2 of our look ahead to 2015!

Fancy Dress Skiers Brave Freezing Cold for Red Bull Jump and Freeze Comments Off on Fancy Dress Skiers Brave Freezing Cold for Red Bull Jump and Freeze

In the Caucasus Mountains of Georgia, 25 teams of snowboarders and skiers took to a snowy slope in a bid to snag prizes and recognition in the Red Bull Jump and Freeze event.

But it’s not your standard skiing and snowboarding event. The main goal is to look as daft as possible; that and plunging into a big pool of freezing cold water.

Hailing from all walks of life, experienced and inexperienced winter sports fanatics gathered on the 17th of March to don their boards and skis and go sliding down the icy, 100-metre hill and perform a textbook landing into the pool. It certainly looks a bit nippy.

Competitors dressed up in the most zany, creative and eye-catching costumes they could find for the slope. A panel of judges – also dressed up – judged the outfits and the jump and handed out prizes for the more creative offerings.

This year, some of the more memorable costumes included Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, a giant shark, Superman and a variety of animals. One of the winning teams was a couple who took to the slope dressed as a bride and groom, calling themselves the poignant ‘Tragic Marriage’.

This is the second year for the odd event, having been held last year in St. Petersburg. With a bigger turnout this year and many more wacky outfits, it’s safe to say that when the event is held again next year, there’s the promise of yet more chilly, madcap antics.

Chip Shop Strop Culled by Batman and Buzz Comments Off on Chip Shop Strop Culled by Batman and Buzz

Our favourite heroes Batman and Buzz Lightyear went about their daily duties in Manchester this week and saved a chip shop from a mass brawl.

By the time the police had appeared on the scene, the trouble had been cleared and the owner of the chip shop, Aria Nouri, went about his day.

As reported by the Mirror, a brawl between 20 youths broke out in the middle of his shop, so he called the landlord of the local pub, Steve Lowe, who came to the rescue along with one of his barmen from the Horse and Jockey in Greater Manchester.

The look of sheer surprise on their faces when Batman and Buzz turned up to save the day was apparently something to behold:

Mr Lowe said: “I don’t think anyone was expecting Batman to come to the rescue. The look on some of their faces was a picture.

“When the police arrived their jaws just dropped and I told them nobody is pressing charges.

“A policeman pal of mine later told me that it was reported as an incident and the log said something like, ‘Large scale disturbance at chippy but no further action needed… Batman sorted it’.”

Mr Lowe and his bartender, Shane Lee, had been attending a fancy dress party in their pub when they received the call and that was the last thing that Mr Nouri was expecting:

“I never expected him to turn up as Batman. He just flew in and got the crowd out of the chippy.

“The costumes were brilliant and everyone was stunned when they turned up.

“The youngsters had been drinking, but nobody thought about punching Batman.”

The Mirror likened it to that famous scene from Only Fools and Horses, in which Del Boy and Rodney scared off a gang trying to rob a lady of her handbag!

Unique 80’s Outfits Comments Off on Unique 80’s Outfits

80’s fancy dress parties are now so ubiquitous, that making an impact can be a real challenge. Of course there are classic 80’s outfits, such as a Madonna costume or leg warmers, but whilst these costumes can be a whole lot fun, they are a little overused.

Luckily, for the the 80’s fancy dress partygoer the 80’s was known for its creative styles, and therefore creating an fancy dress outfit that is truly unique, but still retains that 80’s dimension is entirely possible.

Whilst the 80’s was an age of the pop idol, that doesn’t mean that you need necessarily dress in imitation of a human. And instead why not take some classic 80’s board games and brands as inspiration!

Whilst intuitively dressing like a game of Twister, for example, might seem like an arts and crafts nightmare, in reality the 80’s board game look can be achieved fairly easy. At Fancy Dress Ball our 80’s Twister costumes are ready to wear straight out of the box.

Of course board games are just the tip of the iceberg, and at Fancy Dress Ball we specialize in loads of novelty 80’s outfits. Rather than just stocking a few mullet wigs, we offer loads of truly unique 80’s looks, which means that whether you want a unique 80’s fancy dress costume or want to deck out your pals in different costumes you can do it in style.

For example, just check our our  80’s glam rock guitar costumes, or our 80’s air hostess costume – truly unique ways to wear 80’s fancy dress.
