2015- A Look Ahead

Happy new year! Did you have a good one? Are you returning to work today filled with resolutions and good intentions?

Well, we are too – and we’re really excited about all of the fantastic opportunities (excuses!) to dress up there are in 2015. We’re just itching to share a few with you…

January is Creativity Month – and what could be more creative than wearing fancy dress? On top of that, the 14th is National Dress Up Your Pet day, and it’s Winnie the Pooh Day on the 18th. And there you have three cast-iron excuses to get your fancy dress on!

Everyone knows that 14th February is Valentine’s Day… but did you know that the 2nd is both Hedgehog Day and Marmot Day? And on Friday the 13th, it’s Blame Someone Else Day. So you can legitimately turn up for work in fancy dress, and… blame someone else! Our favourite though, has to be the 16th, which is Do a Grouch a Favour Day. What better favour could you do to a grouch, than to dress up like Oscar the Grouch?!

March is Women’s History Month, so expect a lot of things going on to commemorate that. We’re sure if you put your mind to it, you can think of a woman from history to whom you could pay tribute!

If Women’s History Month is not your thing, then what about Dr Seuss Day on the 2nd? Even better, the 3rd is What If Cats And Dogs Had Opposable Thumbs Day – so you can re-use your Cat In The Hat costume, and save on cleaning bills! We know, we’re so helpful!

March really is a jam-packed month. On the 9th we have Barbie day, and following shortly afterwards on the 13th, it’s Ken Day! Why not go the whole hog, and dress up as both of them?

And if you don’t want to dress up for any of these days, then Poultry Day on the 19th is the day for you!

Aside from the fact April 1st is April Fool’s Day, when nothing is off limits, the 2nd is Children’s Book Day – why not dress as your favourite children’s book character? If that’s not appealing, the 4th is World Rat Day… imagine how many people you could freak out on your morning commute, if you did it in a rat costume!

March 11th is Barbershop Quartet Day. Do you have a candy-striped suit and straw hat somewhere at the back of your wardrobe? If that’s not your thing, the 17th is Nothing Like a Dame Day… so dust off that purple wig and the ridiculous heels!

Not feeling inspired? The 23rd is World Book Night, when books are celebrated everywhere. Who’s your favourite literary character?

Ooh, May’s going to be a good one! It’s Batman Day on the 1st! Who doesn’t want to dress up as Batman? Here’s your cast iron excuse to do so. If ghosts and ghouls are more your thing, the 3rd is Paranormal Day.

Of course, the one day in May everyone knows about is Star Wars Day – May the 4th Be With You!

Also, you should probably be aware that the 13th is Leprechaun Day. Keep an eye out for little ginger fellas in bright green suits… or just dress up as one yourself!

Wow, June is like a bumper month for fancy dress enthusiasts! The 9th is Donald Duck Day (though you might want to avoid dressing up as him in public – he never wears trousers!). Then on the 12th, we have Superman Day – another underwear issue, but easier to deal with. On the 19th it’s Garfield the Cat Day, so you can dress as a ginger cat and eat lasagne all day! And finally, the 25th is Global Beatles Day. The possibilities with this one are endless: you could go with early Beatles, with their trademark hair and suits, or the hippie Beatles, with the round spectacles, long hair and free love, man. Then there’s Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, or the outfits from the Magical Mystery Tour… half the work is in deciding which era to choose!

We’ll be back on Wednesday with Part 2 of our look ahead to 2015!

A Marks the Spot at the Beat-Herder Festival Comments Off on A Marks the Spot at the Beat-Herder Festival

Festival season is well and truly underway. If Download can be named as the first major festival on the fancy dress calendar, the season got off to a rather muddy start, but that’s exactly what is so characteristically fun about Great British festivals!

Next up this weekend is the Isle of Wight Festival, but at the end of the month (beginning on the 29th), we have an event that truly embraces the delights of fancy dress – the Beat-Herder Festival in Lancashire. Two years ago, the festival organisers named the fancy dress theme of the weekend as the letter B. Last year, the theme was E, which means, rather unsurprisingly, that this year’s theme is the delightful letter A!

The festival website offers a few ideas, with everything from acrobats to airliners, and we have a whole section dedicated to the letter (amongst every other one of its alphabetic partners) – the letter A costumes category.

This section makes it easier for you to conquer the challenge of finding a letter-themed outfit by giving you a multitude of ideas from which to choose. Classic ideas like the Alice in Wonderland costume and Austin Powers costume are great for a laugh, while you can go for more contemporary ideas like the Angry Birds costumes we have here at Fancy Dress Ball!

If you’re going to the Beat-Herder Festival or are simply planning a letter-themed party, head on over to the ‘A’ costumes section at the link above to find the perfect costume for you. The letter-themed costume challenge just got a little bit easier!

With six pages of costumes to choose from, you’ll never get stuck on the first letter of the alphabet when it comes to dressing up!

Ningunos burros permitieron!  And for those of you, like me, who don’t speak spanish – no donkeys allowed!  I’m sure there was a sign on the entrance saying no donkeys not even guide donkeys for the blind!  However I was given assurances these these mexican donkeys had come through the proper quarantine channels and were safe to be grazing round the event!

These fancy dress costumes are inflatable with a small fan placed in the bag of the costume which keeps a constant air flow into the costume.  This means that you don’t need to spend an hour blowing up your costume before you wear it – possibly making yourself light headed in the process!  As you can see the costume wearers legs are the back legs of the donkey and the costume forms the wearers front legs.  Can you remember Bernie Clifton?  If you can then you get the general idea.
The total group of donkey fancy dress costumes amounted to about 10 people and the sight of these people parading themselves on the dancefloor got a really good response from the crowd.  I know many people went home with a ‘mexican on a donkey’ picture.
Other items used to enhance this costume were the mexican sombrero and the mexican moustache.  Personally I would also have added a poncho, a couple of toys guns and a big fat fake cigar which would really have finished the look for me.  I would maybe even have taken taken a carrot to feed the donkey, got to keep its energy levels up after all!

If your off to a big event and your going as a group then it can be a good idea of linking your costumes together with a theme.  There are many popular themes but every now and again we see people who have thought differently and put together a theme that really hits the mark.  This group of girls created an air stewardess theme – so it’s last call for boarding for the Fancy Dress Flight to Butlins Skegness!

What would have been an good addition to this party of sassy hostess girls would have been a fancy dress sexy pilot to make sure they got safely to their intended destination.  Making a good theme successful comes down to the level of detail you put into your costumes and ensuring that you pay special attention your costume accessories.  This group of girls had to be one of the most photographed groups during this event which is a reflection on the quality of their fancy dress costumes and the effort that was put into them.  At one point I thought that they may need a special police escort to navigate their way through the venue – anything to avoid the paparazzi!  Have they inspired you to think of a theme for your next event? Perhaps you wanna replicate the theme – costumes available from fancydressball.co.uk along with other great ideas.  If you need a theme just get in contact and tell us more detail about your event and how many people are going and we will give you some suggestions.  We always look forward to hearing from you and hearing about your past events and fancy dress experiences at fancydressball.co.uk or maybe come and visit us on our facebook page either way we look forward to it.

Check out this bevy of beautiful young ladies who have chosen to have themed costumes.  This is the moulin rouge selection of outfits.  The moulin rouge look has always been popular and more so since the release of the Baz Luhrmann movie Moulin Rouge! starring Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor.  People of all backgrounds would come to the famous Paris showbar to see the beautiful Can Can dancers and saloon girls.  The girls costumes shown here with bright colours and designed so as to leave less to the imagination that some other fancy dress costumes!

Did you know…  the English translation of Moulin Rouge is Red Windmill ?

You can see that these girls are obviously very happy with their costumes.  I know that the smiles on their faces stayed there all the way through their fancy dress crusade.  It really was an impressive sight to see such a great group of girls having lots of fun in true fancy dress style – I know you did girls!

So why not show a little leg and be a temptress by adding a cheeky little garter.  This outfit would not be complete without the addition of a sexy pair of suspenders or stockings and of course the essential feather boa.  These costumes are great for a large party of girls and the range of costumes available from fancydressball.co.uk allows for individuality – so each person can have their own unique costume yet still be within the fancy dress theme.  Even if you already have a costume why don’t you take a look at the great range of accessories – accesories make the difference between good and great costumes.

Hope you all take the time to visit fancydressball.co.uk – see you soon!
