If you’re planning on a Disco or Ballroom Barbie look, you might want to consider using a bolder eye-shadow and black eye-liner for a more striking effect. Once again, it’s best to highlight your lower waterline with a pale pink or white eye-pencil.

Try Something Different with 1920s Fancy Dress Outfits Comments Off on Try Something Different with 1920s Fancy Dress Outfits

80’s costumes never go out of fashion (unlike the fashions themselves) and everyone loves a 1970’s themed costume party, but if you’re looking for something a little different, why not take your inspiration from the 1920s?

The 20s was an era of enormous change and a tremendously exciting time to be alive. It was the age of gramophone records and jazz music, rising hemlines and flappers in risque Paris fashion dresses. After the first world war, opportunities were many and expectations were high. Women were beginning to take a much more prominent role in public life. Louise Brooks, Greta Garbo, and Clarke Gable appeared on the silver screen and were adored all over the world.

Fashion Flapper Costume White

1920’s fancy dress outfits are slinky, form-fitting, and very tasteful. They make very sexy fancy dress costumes that don’t reveal too much. Dresses were worn long, with hems below the knee (you can ignore historical accuracy on this count- nobody will notice), with relatively high, broad necklines that showed more shoulder than cleavage. The classic hairstyle was the short, sleek bob- there are plenty of examples in the wig section. An extra long chain of beads or pearls and a fascinator (a tall, eye-catching hair accessory) will complete your 20’s look.

Men’s evening dress was formal and restrained but moustaches were waxed and elaborate. Start with a plain or pinstripe suit then add details. Facial hair is a must for any men’s 20’s costume – if your outfit doesn’t come with a fake moustache, grab one from the wigs and beards page. The 1920’s were all about elegance so think long and curly when choosing your ‘tache.

The Weird And Wonderful World Of Fancy Dress Wigs Comments Off on The Weird And Wonderful World Of Fancy Dress Wigs

As anyone who has ever had a bad hair day knows, it’s the hairstyle that makes the outfit. The perfect hair to match any gents or ladies fancy dress getup can be had simply and easily. There is no need to spend hours in front of the mirror or do anything radical that you’ll need to painstakingly undo the next day. If you grew up in the 80s and ever tried to give yourself a teased Robert Smith hairdo, you’ll know just how difficult it can be to get your normal style back!

Many of our fancy dress outfits come with wigs included, and for those that don’t, there’s our well-stocked and varied wig section. We’ve got the perfect wig to match any of our mens or ladies fancy dress costumes or one you’re making yourself, from the grandest of big hair to go with fancy dress outfits using the 70s and 80s as a theme to outrageously coloured punk hair to bald Friar Tuck wigs. The selection really is huge.

A fake moustache is a great addition to almost any men’s costume. Again, we’ve got every possible style covered from the brusque London Bobby to fabulously curled creations ideal for ostentatious twirling to tiny little devil patches. Those looking for an instant bushy beard won’t be disappointed, and we’ve got plenty of smaller beard and moustache sets. Some of these come with matching stick-on eyebrows included.  There are even curly chest hair wigs for those looking for that extra manly touch!

80’s Fancy Dress – Grab your Shoulder Pads Comments Off on 80’s Fancy Dress – Grab your Shoulder Pads

It’s hard to believe that 80’s styles are considered vintage now—but time marches on, as they say. And if you’re a fan of the 80’s, or you lived through the 80’s, why not go to your next party in 80’s fancy dress?

The bold colours and the big plastic beads, rainbow stripes and fishnet stockings—all this and more make 80’s style women’s fancy dress costumes a lot of fun. And you’ll be sure to catch someone’s eye if you go as a Baywatch lifeguard, a blushing bride, or a red or pink sparkly rock guitar.

Pair a neon blue tutu with black fishnet stockings, add a pretty tank top, and you’re set to go. For more snazzy accessories and fun final touches, add big, false eyelashes in pink or purple, big sunglasses, or long strands of florescent beads.

Neon Purple Glam WigLeg warmers were all the rage, so why not pop on a pair of orange or pink ones over your white fishnet stockings? Wear white heels and an orange or green tutu, and you’ve got the look.

And if you really want to cause a stir, why not add a fun wig? You can have long, luxuriously straight purple hair, or maybe you’d prefer bleach blond crimped locks? Glamorous curls or a frizzy afro – with a wig, you can have hair in just about any colour for one night.

Dress up your next fancy dress occasion with a fun 80’s costume, and you’re sure to get all the attention you want.

Halloween Fancy Dress Costumes for Couples Comments Off on Halloween Fancy Dress Costumes for Couples

You and the other half have been invited to a Halloween party and you have decided you want to dress as a twosome. But what Halloween costumes are there for couples?

This can be a great opportunity to have a bit of fun, while showing your friends and family what a great couple you are, always up for a laugh.  If one of you already has an idea, the other simply has to dress in Halloween costumes that complement each other.

For example, why don’t you express your love for music by dressing up as your favourite pop stars. We have a wide range of 1980’s fancy dress such as Madonna and Michael Jackson outfits. Likewise if you are a couple who loves horror films, why not dress up as zombies? We also have a number of different male and female vampire outfits, so if you love films such as Twilight or Dracula, dress to impress (and scare).

Adult Zombie School Boy CostumeThere are also more traditional Halloween costumes you could consider such as Robin Hood and Maid Marion.  Or take inspiration from the 1920s and dress up as a flapper girl and gangster. Other classic outfits to think about are Anthony and Cleopatra or a cowboy and a sexy saloon girl.  Have fun with it, but make sure to think about your outfits well in advance to avoid disappointment.

Make sure you pay attention to the details and get accessories that will complement your look. For example, make sure you have the right wig for Cleopatra and a hat for a cowboy outfit.

Butlins 70's weekender

Butlins 70's weekender

Fancy dress costumes have been a passion for the whole team here at fancy dress ball for several years now.  The beginning for all this dressing up and having fun was when we all attended our first Butlins Weekender together.  Now many have weekends have passed since then, most of them at Butlins Skegness but also at Butlins Minehead.

As I’m sure you are all aware each Butlins adult weekend has a theme – including 60’s, 70’s80’s and disco inferno to name a few.  Our first weekend together was a 70’s weekend in 2006.  Our fancy dress costumes came from a mixture of previously owned items and some items bought prior to the event.  I think we even topped up our costumes with some items from Skegness town centre!  Butlins also sell some good top up items like wigs, shades and other accessories for those last minute additions.  We quickly noticed the look of fun and enjoyment on other peoples faces as we pranced around the big tent with our Mother-of-all-afro wigs on and our brightly coloured pimp outfits.  Look at the picture – I am the one with the genuine moustache by the way – very proud of that tash I am!

Feeling a genuine part of someone elses fun and enjoyment is a feeling that you don’t come across very often.  After that night we new what we had to do – keep coming to Butlins, keep enjoying ourselves and keep sharing the fun with everyone!  The fancydressball.co.uk team had given themselves a challenge – can we look better at the next event!  Stay tuned in to this Blog for our progress.

Ladies 60's Fancy Dress

Ladies 60's Fancy Dress

The line between 60’s fancy dress and 70’s fancy dress is quite blurred as the flower power and hippie era did cross both decades.  But wether your going to a 60’s fancy dress or 70’s fancy dress event you’ll be sure to find yourself a costume solution at fancydressball.co.uk This theme really allows you to go for a complete head to toe look with every item of your costume having multiple options making your choice of costume combination unique amongst your fellow party goers.  It’s almost a certainty that you will be able to add to your costumes with items from your own wardrobe, but if you don’t tell anyone then I won’t!

Knee high boots are a minimum with people often opting for the sexier thigh high boot option.  Moving on you’ve got to get yourself some good hosiery  or brightly coloured socks – remember during these two decades no two colours clash and anything goes.  A flowery or brightly coloured dress holds the look together.  Hair bands are a common addition and I think rose tinted shades are a must.  Have a look at the rest of our great accessories and see what else you would like to add to your costume.

So come along to fancydressball.co.uk and find all that you need to make a successful costume.  Remember to take some photographs of your costumes and send them back to show us how much of a good time you all had and we’ll share them with the rest of the world!
