back to the 60s

We’re going back to the 60s for this blog post! 1960s parties are all the rage lately – all of the time, really. It’s just a fantastic decade to dress up as, and there are so many fantastic 1960s costume options. Here are five of our favourites:

1. Elvis

Well, you can’t do 1960s fancy dress without mentioning The King, can you! He may have spent most of the 1960s making movies and their soundtracks, but in 1968 he returned to live performances – and his fans rejoiced! Everyone loves a good Elvis impression, don’t they. Best get in some serious mirror time, making sure you can perfect that curled lip. Uh-hu-huh!

2. Beatles

Do you see what we mean about the 1960s being a fantastic decade now? With the Beatles you have two choices: you can go for their early look, with the distinctive grey suits they wore; or later 1960s, with the colourful Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band suits.  As soon as you walk into the party, everyone will instantly know who you’re supposed to be!

3. Psychedelia, man!

Psychedelia was big in the 1960s, with people like Timothy Leary and Aldous Huxley and people taking lots of drugs! We don’t recommend illegal substances, but brightly coloured outfits and  swirly designs are definitely worth a look, maannnnn!

4. Austin Powers

Okay, so we know the Austin Powers movies were released in the 1990s – but they were set in the 1960s, and celebrated everything that’s great about the decade! We suggest you re-watch the movies as preparation for your starring role at the party, and practise your dance moves. Groovy, baby!

5. Operation!

That favourite board game from your childhood was invented in 1964 by a man called John Spinello. We can hardly believe this fabulous game has been around for so long – it’s certainly stood the test of time! Why not give your fellow party-goers a history lesson by dressing up as the Operation game?

Themed Parties: The 1960s Comments Off on Themed Parties: The 1960s

Everybody loves a good old fashioned themed fancy dress party. Over the years, we have seen some truly great costumes come from the entertainment industry, but there is one decade that always stands out as a favourite amongst many – the 1960s.

It’s the chosen theme for many a fancy dress party and there’s plenty of inspiration for costumes. We take a look at some of the outfits that made the 1960s so memorable to give you some ideas for your own party.

The Beatles

Undoubtedly one of the greatest and most influential bands of all time, The Beatles are always on the horizon when it comes to 1960s fancy dress. Of all the Beatles costumes, Sergeant Pepper has to pip it at the post – the instantly recognisable costume is still a strong favourite today!

1966 Soccer Hero

The 60s was, indeed, the decade in which England won the World Cup (in case you had forgotten after all these years of hurt). Bobby Moore was an absolutely stalwart part of that defence and he has been immortalised in this soccer hero fancy dress costume to recognise his achievements.

Marilyn Monroe

We recently saw the 50th anniversary of the death of the Blonde Bombshell and it is only fitting that her distinctive look is still a fancy dress favourite in the 21st century. She was sultry, sexy and altogether loveable, so what better way is there to stand out at a themed fancy dress party today?
