Fancy a Round of Pub Golf? Comments Off on Fancy a Round of Pub Golf?

pub golf fancy dress

If you’re heading off for a round of pub golf, then you really do need to invest in some pub golf fancy dress! But first of all, let’s just make sure we all know how to play the game, shall we?

In order to play pub golf, you need to select either nine or eighteen pubs – each pub is a “hole” on your golf course. Pub golf is basically a pub crawl – there is no ball, no five iron, and most probably no grass. It’s more organised than your standard pub crawl though – you decide on the “holes” before you begin – and also on the designated drink and par number.

For example, you might have hole 8 – par 5 – pint of lager.

This would mean that in the eighth pub you visit, you must order a pint of lager and drink it in five gulps.

In each bar you mark on your scorecard how many gulps you took to finish your drink. For every gulp over the par number, you receive another score mark – so in our example, if a person finishes their pint in six gulps, they get a +1 on their scorecard.

The aim of the game is to reach the eighteenth hole with the lowest score of all your friends.

There are of course variations on the game, including special rules for birthdays, holes with a water hazard, meaning nobody can use the toilets while there, and other such hilarity. There are also often penalties for things like spilling a drink or falling over.

For full details, there’s a handy website called Pub Golf Guide that can help you to organise your event.

It is generally required that if you are enjoying a round of pub golf, you should look the part. All the best pub golf rounds require that participants dress up. For one thing, this distinguishes pub golfers from random people in the pub who are just being a bit funny about how they drink their drinks!  You can go for a standard golfing costume if you like, but for a lot of people, if you’re going to the effort of wearing a pub golf fancy dress costume – then you may as well go to the effort! Our favourite is this zombie golfer – because as the night goes on, the drinking can only add to your (already amazing) zombie shuffle!

Have you had a pub golf event recently? If so, we’d love to see some photos! Why not come and share them on our Facebook page?

2015- A Look Ahead (1)

Welcome to the second part of our look ahead to 2015, where we share all of the fantastic fancy dress opportunities going on…

July 1st is Canada Day, Canada’s national day. Dress as a mountie, or another famous Canadian… like… er… Avril Lavigne! The second is World UFO Day, so there is plenty of scope for alien costumes, and then it’s International Tiger Day on the 29th. Rawr!

August is a great month for fancy dress: the 8th is International Cat Day, and if you want to go a little more hardcore, the 10th is World Lion Day! If cats aren’t your thing, the 26th is Dog Day too! If you’re not into dressing as an animal, dust off the Christmas costumes and celebrate Be An Angel Day on the 22nd.

September is Chicken Month! It’s possibly not practical to dress as a chicken all month… but for part of it? If you’re not really feeling the love for the chicken costumes, what about waiting for Teddy Bear Day on the 9th? The 13th is Roald Dahl Day, which is definitely something to look forward to. Of course, everyone knows the 19th is Talk Like a Pirate Day – obviously, you’ll already have that one marked on your calendar. And then, we round off the month of fancy dress fun on the 26th with Lumberjack Day!

As the weather turns colder, the fancy dress outfits become more fun, right? October has plenty of opportunities for bonkers fancy dress outfits, with World Farm Animals Day on the 2nd, and World Animal Day on the 4th. Then we have Mad Hatter Day on the 6th, World Octopus Day on the 8th and a definite favourite: Punk for a Day Day on the 25th! Of course, October is also the fancy dress high-point of the year, with Halloween on the 31st! We always look forward to this one!

November is fairly quiet for fancy dress, aside from the obvious Guy Fawkes Night. The 3rd is Jellyfish Day – that would be a fun costume to put together! And the 10th is Sesame Street Day; which character will you dress as?

December is a fantastic month for fancy dress. Aside from all the festive fancy dress opportunities, there is World Wildlife Conservation Day on the 4th – why not dress as a panda? International Day of the Ninja is on the 5th; the 14th is Monkey Day, and the 21st is International Dalek Remembrance Day. Imagine the fun you could have getting a costume together for that one!

And there we have it: 2015 in a nutshell. We hope you’ll stick around and see what else is going on through the course of the year!

2015- A Look Ahead

Happy new year! Did you have a good one? Are you returning to work today filled with resolutions and good intentions?

Well, we are too – and we’re really excited about all of the fantastic opportunities (excuses!) to dress up there are in 2015. We’re just itching to share a few with you…

January is Creativity Month – and what could be more creative than wearing fancy dress? On top of that, the 14th is National Dress Up Your Pet day, and it’s Winnie the Pooh Day on the 18th. And there you have three cast-iron excuses to get your fancy dress on!

Everyone knows that 14th February is Valentine’s Day… but did you know that the 2nd is both Hedgehog Day and Marmot Day? And on Friday the 13th, it’s Blame Someone Else Day. So you can legitimately turn up for work in fancy dress, and… blame someone else! Our favourite though, has to be the 16th, which is Do a Grouch a Favour Day. What better favour could you do to a grouch, than to dress up like Oscar the Grouch?!

March is Women’s History Month, so expect a lot of things going on to commemorate that. We’re sure if you put your mind to it, you can think of a woman from history to whom you could pay tribute!

If Women’s History Month is not your thing, then what about Dr Seuss Day on the 2nd? Even better, the 3rd is What If Cats And Dogs Had Opposable Thumbs Day – so you can re-use your Cat In The Hat costume, and save on cleaning bills! We know, we’re so helpful!

March really is a jam-packed month. On the 9th we have Barbie day, and following shortly afterwards on the 13th, it’s Ken Day! Why not go the whole hog, and dress up as both of them?

And if you don’t want to dress up for any of these days, then Poultry Day on the 19th is the day for you!

Aside from the fact April 1st is April Fool’s Day, when nothing is off limits, the 2nd is Children’s Book Day – why not dress as your favourite children’s book character? If that’s not appealing, the 4th is World Rat Day… imagine how many people you could freak out on your morning commute, if you did it in a rat costume!

March 11th is Barbershop Quartet Day. Do you have a candy-striped suit and straw hat somewhere at the back of your wardrobe? If that’s not your thing, the 17th is Nothing Like a Dame Day… so dust off that purple wig and the ridiculous heels!

Not feeling inspired? The 23rd is World Book Night, when books are celebrated everywhere. Who’s your favourite literary character?

Ooh, May’s going to be a good one! It’s Batman Day on the 1st! Who doesn’t want to dress up as Batman? Here’s your cast iron excuse to do so. If ghosts and ghouls are more your thing, the 3rd is Paranormal Day.

Of course, the one day in May everyone knows about is Star Wars Day – May the 4th Be With You!

Also, you should probably be aware that the 13th is Leprechaun Day. Keep an eye out for little ginger fellas in bright green suits… or just dress up as one yourself!

Wow, June is like a bumper month for fancy dress enthusiasts! The 9th is Donald Duck Day (though you might want to avoid dressing up as him in public – he never wears trousers!). Then on the 12th, we have Superman Day – another underwear issue, but easier to deal with. On the 19th it’s Garfield the Cat Day, so you can dress as a ginger cat and eat lasagne all day! And finally, the 25th is Global Beatles Day. The possibilities with this one are endless: you could go with early Beatles, with their trademark hair and suits, or the hippie Beatles, with the round spectacles, long hair and free love, man. Then there’s Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, or the outfits from the Magical Mystery Tour… half the work is in deciding which era to choose!

We’ll be back on Wednesday with Part 2 of our look ahead to 2015!

Celebrate Marilyn Monroe’s Birthday! Comments Off on Celebrate Marilyn Monroe’s Birthday!

Marilyn Monroe

This week would have been Marilyn Monroe’s 88th birthday. She’s been dead for over half a century, but she’s still one of the most popular and iconic stars the world has ever seen. Why not celebrate by dressing up in a Marilyn Monroe costume?

Born in 1926 as Norma Jeane Mortenson (her last name was soon changed to Baker), she spent most of her childhood in a succession of foster homes, and first married at the age of 16 in order to avoid being sent to an orphanage. Her first job was in a munitions factory; while she was there, a film maker from the US Army came to take morale-boosting photos of young women helping the war effort. He took photos of Norma Jeane, and encouraged her to sign up to a modelling agency, which she did. Having been told they were looking for models with blonde hair, she bleached her own chestnut brown hair to a golden blonde colour, and quickly became the agency’s most popular model. Soon after, Norma Jeane was spotted by 20th Centry Fox, and signed up on a six-month contract. They didn’t like her name though, and decided to come up with a glamorous stage name. She chose Monroe as her surname, as it was her mother’s maiden name. Marilyn was chosen because she reminded a studio executive of Marilyn Miller, a 1920s Broadway musical star. Marilyn Monroe was born!

She had several bit-parts in movies during her time at 20th Century Fox, but her starring roles came later, after she had courted controversy by becoming Playboy Magazine’s first Playmate of the Month. Monroe’s IMDB entry boasts 33 credits as an actress, though most of us probably only associate her with a handful of movies: Some Like It Hot, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, Something’s Got to Give or How to Marry a MillionaireShe quickly became typecast as a “dumb blonde” and seemed to play up to this role, with her trademark blonde hair and bright red lipstick. Here are ten things you might not have known about her though:

  1. Monroe is often depicted as the prime example of a curvy woman, but she was actually quite petite, weighing just 8st 3lb, at 5ft 5 tall.
  2. Although they divorced and she remarried, famous baseball player Joe DiMaggio made sure half a dozen long-stemmed red roses were placed on her grave twice a week until his death in 1999. His final words upon his death were “I’ll finally get to see Marilyn.”
  3. Far from being a dumb blonde, her favourite novel was Ulysses by James Joyce, a famously complicated and difficult read. She said she read it aloud to herself, because she loved the way it sounded. She also read Walt Whitman and Tolstoy, and listened to Beethoven.
  4. The famous line, “it’s me, Sugar” from Some Like it Hot took an amazing 47 takes for Monroe to get right. In the end the director had to write it on a black board in front of her!
  5. Her favourite drink was Champagne, and her preferred brand was the pricey Dom Perignon.
  6. She purportedly shaved half an inch off one heel of each pair of shoes, in order to perfect that trademark wiggle as she walked.
  7. Although never nominated for an Oscar, she did win a Golden Globe in 1960 for her performance in Some Like it Hot.
  8. Hugh Hefner paid £54,000 to reserve a crypt next to hers
  9. That famous skirt blowing scene was in The Seven Year Itch. When she filmed it in 1954, over 2000 people gathered around to watch.
  10. She featured on a USA postage stamp in 1995.

Marilyn Monroe

Marilyn Monroe fancy dress is not as difficult as you’d think. The iconic Monroe look is simple yet effective: black mascara, single beauty spot, bright red lips. Finished off with a dash of Chanel No5, of course! Don’t worry if you’re not a natural blonde; she wasn’t either! A wig and a simple white dress, and you’re there! Your pooch can even get in on the action with a fabulous Marilyn Monroe dog costume.

Happy birthday Marilyn!

If you’re planning on a Disco or Ballroom Barbie look, you might want to consider using a bolder eye-shadow and black eye-liner for a more striking effect. Once again, it’s best to highlight your lower waterline with a pale pink or white eye-pencil.

Movie Party Special Comments Off on Movie Party Special

Last week saw the end of this year’s award season with the 86th Academy Awards. If you’re planning a film –themed party to celebrate the winners (and the losers) or just need an excuse to dress up as your favourite character, we’ve got some great ideas to inspire you.

American Hustle

David O’Russell’s 70s flick American Hustle received a whopping 10 nominations at this year’s Academy Awards, yet sadly came away with nothing. But as the film that received the most nominations in 2014, there’s still every reason to dress up in your 70s get-up for your movie-based bash.

We love this great tutorial from Punk Chyaz, which shows you how to achieve a cool Jennifer Lawrence-inspired look from the film.

The Wolf of Wall Street

Martin Scorsese’s tale of 80s yuppie greed didn’t win any awards at this year’s Oscars, but as it’s one of the most talked about films this year, there’s every reason to reach for a massive mobile phone, slap on some khakis, a bright polo shirt and complete with a sweater over the shoulders. Don’t forget to slick back your hair and turn up your collar!

Image 1

 The Great Gatsby

Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby came away with the award for best costume design, for its fresh and fabulous flapper outfits. If you’re going for a Great Gatsby themed ensemble, then this gorgeous hairstyle will really finish off your look.

Check out our BAFTAs special for more ideas on how to achieve and award winning 20s style!

Image 2

And the rest…

If you’re going for something a little more fun with your costume why not dress in style and celebrate the film that swept the board at this year’s Oscars: Gravity.

Iron Man 3 was also in the list of this year’s nominees, so if you’ve always fancied yourself as playboy and entrepreneur Tony Stark, now’s your chance to become one of Marvel’s most well-loved superheroes!

And the rest#

Just for fun…

Star Trek: Into Darkness was also nominated for an award, but even if you don’t fancy sporting the Spock ears and blue sweater yourself, you might have a furry friend who’d love to be involved in your Oscar celebrations!
