Yay, Freshers Week! Loads of new friends, loads of events, pub crawls, drinking games… Fun, right?

In amongst all the fun though, it’s important to stay safe. Here are a few top tips:

Share Your Mobile Number!

We know you’ve only just met all of these people, but make sure some of them (especially your housemates) have your mobile number. If you’re on a night out with a group of people, give them your number in case you get separated.

Safety in Numbers!

Male or female, you’re safer if you stay in a group. If you’re staying in halls, there will always be someone walking back the same way as you – never walk alone!

Before going out anywhere, find out numbers for local taxi companies and save them to your mobile. Don’t wait until you’re drunk and trying to get home to try and find a number; we all know that never works! It’s a good idea to use the cab companies recommended by the uni, students’ union or freshers’ fayre – don’t just jump into the first cab you see, no matter how tired you are!

Where do you live?

It’s also a good idea to write down your new address on a piece of paper in your wallet or purse – that way, when you’re a little worse for wear and trying to find your way back to “er.. that place I just moved all my stuff into” – you can at least produce a piece of paper with your address on it!

Watch your drink!

Never, ever leave your drink on the bar or a table while you wander off to the toilets or to chat to someone. Once you’ve bought a drink, keep it with you until you’ve finished. Never accept a drink from someone you don’t know, unless it is purchased and poured in front of you. A drink can be spiked very quickly and quietly

Know your limits.

Yes, it’s fun to go out and get really drunk with your mates – but it’s important to know when enough is enough. It’s also important to not do anything you don’t want to. Drinking games are fun – but if you don’t want to join in, don’t. Nobody will remember what goes on the next morning any way!
