Make World Book Day a Family Fancy Dress Day

Posted on February 23, 2012 by admin

Schools and parents all over the UK are preparing for one of the biggest fancy dress events of the year this week. Ideas are being generated and costumes are being created in households and classrooms everywhere – that’s right: it’s World Book Day on the 1st March!
World Book Day presents an awesome opportunity for kids to get kitted out in fancy dress and become their favourite character for a day, encouraging them to really delve into the stories that they (and we) love. We take a look at the top 5 kids World Book Day costumes to give you some creative inspiration:

1) Harry Potter Costumes
A splendiferously British fancy dress idea – Harry Potter is one of the enduring costumes to come out of modern British books and cinema. Single mum J.K. Rowling captured the imaginations of millions of children and even more adults with her wonderful wizardry and inspired many of us to don the robe, the magic wand and even the fake scar of the young schoolboy superstar. We might live as muggles but we can still be wizards for a day!

2) World War 2 Girls Evacuee Costume
Some might be surprised that this costume makes the list but it has proved to be one of the most popular children’s outfits in the UK at this time of year. Dressing your children up in World War costumes is a brilliant way to engage and educate them about the experiences of their ancestors. Maybe they should do fancy dress at school every day…

3) Where’s Wally Girls & Boys Costume
Looking like a wally is what most people want to avoid, but children absolutely love it on World Book Day. Where’s Wally is one of the most recognisable characters in the land of children’s books – it’s perfect inspiration for a great big game of hide and seek!

4) Robin Hood
One of the great storybook legends that is a must-know for all kids is the valiant Robin Hood – both in terms of storytelling and fancy dress. The tale of Robin Hood and his Merry Men was almost written for fancy dress; who wouldn’t love dressing up as the brave British do-gooder?

5) Alice in Wonderland
Last but certainly not least on our list is the beautiful Alice from Lewis Carroll’s classic novel, Alice in Wonderland. For nearly 150 years, children have travelled with Alice on her wonderful adventure through the weird and downright whacky world that was created by one of the most acclaimed children’s writer to have ever lived.
World Book Day is a big event on the fancy dress calendar, so it shouldn’t just be exclusive to the school-kids of the world…after all, dressing up is surely more about bringing out your inner child than anything else! Feel free to follow us on Facebook for more fancy dress ideas…
