Happy Towel Day!

Posted on May 25, 2016 by Fancy Dress Ball

What is the meaning of life?

Well, it’s the number 42, of course!

Today is Towel Day and anyone who understands that the number 42 is the answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe and everything, will already know that today is Towel Day – and what that means!

Towel Day is, of course, the day of the year when we celebrate Douglas Adams, writer of The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. It’s super easy to celebrate Towel Day – all you need to do is… carry a towel around with you all day, as advised in Chapter 3 of the book.

Of course, as well as carrying your towel you should post about it on social media, using the hashtag #TowelDay.

Meanwhile, here are 5 fun facts about Douglas Adams’ amazing book…

  1. It was based on actual hitchhiking! Douglas Adams hitchhiked from London to Istanbul in 1971 with a copy of a book called Hitch-hiker’s Guide to Europe. One night while drunkenly star gazing in a field, he decided that someone ought to write a Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy because “it looked a lot more attractive out there than it did around me.”
  2. The towels’ significance in the books is also based on real life. On a holiday to Greece with his friends, they were always having to sit around and wait for him while he found his towel, which he kept losing. Adams said, “I came to feel that someone really together, one who was well organised, would always know where his towel was.”
  3. Arthur Dent was originally named Aleric B Dent but Adams changed his name to Arthur during a taxi ride to a pitch meeting with the BBC.
  4. Douglas Adams famously said that he loved deadlines: “I love the whooshing sound they make as they go by.” His publishers didn’t love that whooshing sound so much though, and when he was writing the fourth book in the series they actually locked him up in a hotel suite for three weeks with his editor until the book was finished!
  5. Adams said that the answer to life, the universe and everything was 42 because it made for a good punchline. There had been years of speculation from fans about why he’d chosen the number 42 and many thought he had some obsession with the number but Adams said “The answer to this is very simple. It was a joke. It had to be a number, an ordinary smallish number, and I chose that one.”

Enjoy Towel Day, and if you’re celebrating in towelly style, don’ forget to share a photo on our Facebook page!
