It’s International Tiger Day! Comments Off on It’s International Tiger Day!

Posted on July 29, 2015 by Fancy Dress Ball

Today is International Tiger Day! Anyone who’s old enough will remember that in the 1980s, tigers were the face of a certain massive fuel company, and you could get fabulous tiger t shirts, hats and all sorts of things… what ever happened to that? Those tiger t shirts were so cool! They also had the slogan, Put a Tiger in Your Tank! Then there’s the famous Tony Tiger from Frosties… They’re grrrrrreat!  Is he still around and saying that? We’ve not seen an ad for Frosties for ages! Do kids eat Minecraft cereal instead these days? International Tiger Day is not really about either of these tigers; it’s about protecting tigers as a species. Did you know that if we humans continue killing tigers at our current rate, tigers will be extinct within five years – they’ll probably only exist in zoos. That’s shocking, isn’t it? In the last 100 years, we’ve lost 97% of all wild tigers. There are now only around 3000 living in the wild today. International Tiger Day is about raising awareness of this, and helping to protect tigers. What can you do to raise awareness? Tell your friends it’s International Tiger Day! Dress up as a tiger! Sign a petition to close tiger farms in China. One great – and fun – way to celebrate International Tiger Day is to paint your face as a tiger. Here’s a really great tutorial that doesn’t look too difficult…

As the school holidays are in full swing, celebrating International Tiger Day can be a great way of teaching children some fun facts about tigers. For example…

  • No two tigers have exactly the same stripes. They use their stripes as camoflage in their natural habitat.
  • Tigers are good swimmers (unlike other cats!) and often cool off in a lake or a stream when it’s hot.
  • Tigers are the largest cats in the world. An adult can weigh up to 363 kg – about the same as ten 10-year-olds!
  • Tigers don’t eat vegetables – they’re carnivores and live only on meat.
  • A tiger’s roar can be heard up to 3 kilometres away.
  • Fossilised remains of tigers have been found in China that suggest tigers have been on this planet for up to 2 million years!
  • Today there are five subspecies of tiger: Bengal, Indochinese, Sumatran, South China and Siberian.
  • Caspian, Bali and Javan tigers are all subspecies that have sadly become extinct.

Can you find any more cool tiger facts?

Dress Up Your Pet Day

This Wednesday 14th January is National Dress Up Your Pet Day!

Why should we humans have all the fancy dress fun? This is a day to let our pets get in on the action and dress up.

The obvious choice for a cat is the super-funny Cat Breading – which involves making a hole in a slice of bread, and putting the cat’s head into it like this:

If you have a horse, why not try out this awesome idea…

Got an iguana? What about this one…

What about a guinea pig dressed as a dinosaur…

Celebrate Marilyn Monroe’s Birthday! Comments Off on Celebrate Marilyn Monroe’s Birthday!

Marilyn Monroe

This week would have been Marilyn Monroe’s 88th birthday. She’s been dead for over half a century, but she’s still one of the most popular and iconic stars the world has ever seen. Why not celebrate by dressing up in a Marilyn Monroe costume?

Born in 1926 as Norma Jeane Mortenson (her last name was soon changed to Baker), she spent most of her childhood in a succession of foster homes, and first married at the age of 16 in order to avoid being sent to an orphanage. Her first job was in a munitions factory; while she was there, a film maker from the US Army came to take morale-boosting photos of young women helping the war effort. He took photos of Norma Jeane, and encouraged her to sign up to a modelling agency, which she did. Having been told they were looking for models with blonde hair, she bleached her own chestnut brown hair to a golden blonde colour, and quickly became the agency’s most popular model. Soon after, Norma Jeane was spotted by 20th Centry Fox, and signed up on a six-month contract. They didn’t like her name though, and decided to come up with a glamorous stage name. She chose Monroe as her surname, as it was her mother’s maiden name. Marilyn was chosen because she reminded a studio executive of Marilyn Miller, a 1920s Broadway musical star. Marilyn Monroe was born!

She had several bit-parts in movies during her time at 20th Century Fox, but her starring roles came later, after she had courted controversy by becoming Playboy Magazine’s first Playmate of the Month. Monroe’s IMDB entry boasts 33 credits as an actress, though most of us probably only associate her with a handful of movies: Some Like It Hot, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, Something’s Got to Give or How to Marry a MillionaireShe quickly became typecast as a “dumb blonde” and seemed to play up to this role, with her trademark blonde hair and bright red lipstick. Here are ten things you might not have known about her though:

  1. Monroe is often depicted as the prime example of a curvy woman, but she was actually quite petite, weighing just 8st 3lb, at 5ft 5 tall.
  2. Although they divorced and she remarried, famous baseball player Joe DiMaggio made sure half a dozen long-stemmed red roses were placed on her grave twice a week until his death in 1999. His final words upon his death were “I’ll finally get to see Marilyn.”
  3. Far from being a dumb blonde, her favourite novel was Ulysses by James Joyce, a famously complicated and difficult read. She said she read it aloud to herself, because she loved the way it sounded. She also read Walt Whitman and Tolstoy, and listened to Beethoven.
  4. The famous line, “it’s me, Sugar” from Some Like it Hot took an amazing 47 takes for Monroe to get right. In the end the director had to write it on a black board in front of her!
  5. Her favourite drink was Champagne, and her preferred brand was the pricey Dom Perignon.
  6. She purportedly shaved half an inch off one heel of each pair of shoes, in order to perfect that trademark wiggle as she walked.
  7. Although never nominated for an Oscar, she did win a Golden Globe in 1960 for her performance in Some Like it Hot.
  8. Hugh Hefner paid £54,000 to reserve a crypt next to hers
  9. That famous skirt blowing scene was in The Seven Year Itch. When she filmed it in 1954, over 2000 people gathered around to watch.
  10. She featured on a USA postage stamp in 1995.

Marilyn Monroe

Marilyn Monroe fancy dress is not as difficult as you’d think. The iconic Monroe look is simple yet effective: black mascara, single beauty spot, bright red lips. Finished off with a dash of Chanel No5, of course! Don’t worry if you’re not a natural blonde; she wasn’t either! A wig and a simple white dress, and you’re there! Your pooch can even get in on the action with a fabulous Marilyn Monroe dog costume.

Happy birthday Marilyn!

Movie Party Special Comments Off on Movie Party Special

Last week saw the end of this year’s award season with the 86th Academy Awards. If you’re planning a film –themed party to celebrate the winners (and the losers) or just need an excuse to dress up as your favourite character, we’ve got some great ideas to inspire you.

American Hustle

David O’Russell’s 70s flick American Hustle received a whopping 10 nominations at this year’s Academy Awards, yet sadly came away with nothing. But as the film that received the most nominations in 2014, there’s still every reason to dress up in your 70s get-up for your movie-based bash.

We love this great tutorial from Punk Chyaz, which shows you how to achieve a cool Jennifer Lawrence-inspired look from the film.

The Wolf of Wall Street

Martin Scorsese’s tale of 80s yuppie greed didn’t win any awards at this year’s Oscars, but as it’s one of the most talked about films this year, there’s every reason to reach for a massive mobile phone, slap on some khakis, a bright polo shirt and complete with a sweater over the shoulders. Don’t forget to slick back your hair and turn up your collar!

 The Great Gatsby

Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby came away with the award for best costume design, for its fresh and fabulous flapper outfits. If you’re going for a Great Gatsby themed ensemble, then this gorgeous hairstyle will really finish off your look.

Check out our BAFTAs special for more ideas on how to achieve and award winning 20s style!

And the rest…

If you’re going for something a little more fun with your costume why not dress in style and celebrate the film that swept the board at this year’s Oscars: Gravity.

Iron Man 3 was also in the list of this year’s nominees, so if you’ve always fancied yourself as playboy and entrepreneur Tony Stark, now’s your chance to become one of Marvel’s most well-loved superheroes!

And the rest#

Just for fun…

Star Trek: Into Darkness was also nominated for an award, but even if you don’t fancy sporting the Spock ears and blue sweater yourself, you might have a furry friend who’d love to be involved in your Oscar celebrations!

Hands up who is glued to the BBC’s new nature documentary Africa?

Narrated by the legendary Sir David Attenborough, Africa is a six-part series full of spectacular footage of the continent’s weird and wonderful wildlife fighting to survive in some of the most unforgiving surroundings on the planet.

If you haven’t seen it yet then head over to iPlayer to catch up on previous episodes or tune in on Wednesday nights to watch the latest instalment.

It’s an amazing programme and we’ve got some equally-brilliant animal costumes if you want to monkey around on the harsh and unforgiving plains of Great Britain.

Just when you thought it was safe to go to that fancy dress party…duh nuh, duh nuh, duh nuh. There’s no animal more fearsome than a shark. Fact. Luckily, this outfit is a little more light-hearted than the great white shark that struck fear into the hearts of movie fans in the cult film Jaws back in the 1970s.

Onesies are all the rage at the moment and this one is super snappy. Complete with feet covers, hood and tail, this all-in-one crocodile will make you really stand out from the crowd, especially with an added splash of green face and body paint. Just be careful, though, of any budding Mick Dundees who may try to tame you.

Who’s a pretty boy then? This parrot certainly is. It’s bright, it’s colourful, it is bound to ruffle a few feathers and will make sure your costume is a flyaway success. Warning: this outfit will not give you the ability to fly. You have been warned!

If you want to come out of your shell a little then this turtle outfit could be perfect for you. Everyone likes turtles – think the likes of Crush and Squirt in Finding Nemo and the YouTube sensation who simply loves turtles.

Go ape and have a swinging good time as a gorilla at your next get-together with your friends and family. This outfit will keep you nice and warm in the winter months and you’re bound to be the centre of attention.
