The Flintstones, set in the town of Bedrock, is about a working class Stone Age man's life with his family and his next door neighbour and best friend Barney. ‘Yabba Dabba Doo’, Fred Flintstone’s exclamation shouted in the opening credits and was first heard in 1960 when the show was launched on ABC in America, it is also heard every time Frederick Joseph “Fred” Flintstone (his full name) became happy or excited, the phrase widely known and repeated throughout the world, to this day.

The Flintstones animated television ‘sitcom’ ran from 1960 to 1966 and was first seen in the UK on BBC1 in the autumn of 1960. The Flintstones fantasy version of the Stone Age era where, dinosaurs, saber toothed tigers, wooly mammoths and other long extinct animals co–exist with barefoot cavemen such as Fred Flintstone and Barney Rubble. The Flintsones, breaking signifcicant TV ground when it became the first American animated show to depict two people of the opposite sex (Fred and Wilma; Barney and Betty) sleeping together in one bed.

One source of the Flintsone humour was the ways animals were used for technology. An example, being when the characters took photographs with an instant camera, the inside of the camera box would be shown to contain a bird carving the picture on a stone tablet with its bill. Other commonly seen gadgets in the series included, birds configured as "car horns" and activated by pulling on their tails or squeezing their bodies and an electric razor depicted as a clam shell housing a honey-bee vibrating it as the edges are rubbed against the character's face.

The Flinstones original series was cancelled in 1966, but was revived in the 1970 with Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm having grown into teenagers. Several different films including made for TV movies The Jetsons meet the Flintstones in 1987 and A Flintstones Christmas Carol in 2001 as well as live action films depicting the original show being adapted for the ‘big screen’ with The Flintstones in 1994 followed by ‘The Flintstones in Las Vegas’ in 2000.
