Christmas, a time where children wish for a carpet of snow to build a snowman. Parents prepare for families to gather together, sometimes Dad dressing up in his Santa costume, children visiting Santa Claus in his grotto where he is usually ably assisted by ‘Santa’s helpers’ dressed in a brightly coloured Christmas elf costume or Christmas fairy costume. The party season has arrived too and at fancy dress parties nationwide, adults and children alike acquire Christmas fancy dress costumes to emulate Santa and his helpers, even Mum joining in with her Miss Santa fancy dress costume.

Of course, these traditional celebrations are not confined to Britain - Santa Claus in Europe may be St. Nicholas, Kris Kringle or Pere Noel. Christmas trees, originally gifted to England in the 19th century, are decorated with bows and baubles and lit up to add to the joy and merriment. Mistletoe, holly and brightly coloured lights all add to the atmosphere for the Christmas fancy dress to wear at parties, fancy dress balls and general festivities.

Dickens ‘Christmas Carol’ defined the spirit of giving for many. Simply expressed in the 1800’s but now an excuse to give extravagant gifts and eat and drink too much. Elsewhere carols are now sung to celebrate the Nativity story where again, every school gives an interpretation of the story with children adorned with costumes for Christmas performing round the crib for their mums and dads!

A trip to the pantomime is also a tradition of Christmas where the cast don adult Christmas costumes, traditionally the male lead dressing up as the Dame and the female lead adopts the persona of Principal Boy, causing young children untold confusion nowadays!
