Family-friendly Fancy Dress Parties 0

Kids love dressing up even more than grown-ups do. Although a good many adults like to have a bit of costumed fun on Halloween, it’s the children who get the most out of it. For one thing, they’re much easier to scare!

That’s something to bear in mind when planning costume parties with kids on the guest list. A spooky atmosphere is fun but being terrified is not, and what might be a bit of a thrill for an older child or a group of your peers can be harrowing for the little ones. Adapt your Halloween outfits and decorations to account for your most sensitive guest, and be aware that most kids won’t know about props like fake blood. They’re much more likely to think it’s all real.

It’s also a good idea to let all the guests know that there will be children present. These days adult fancy dress can get very adult indeed, and while there is nothing wrong with that in a grown up party full of adult friends, sexy costumes aren’t appropriate for all occasions. Give fair warning if there are going to be children or young teenagers present so everyone can adjust their costume ideas accordingly.

Some themes are more universal than others. Kids are unlikely to really understand 1980s fancy dress and most of them will be completely mystified by all those people in pink leg warmers. For family friendly parties, themes like cowboys and Indians or ghosts and monsters are better choices.

Halloween History 0

Halloween as we know it is a relatively recent festival, but, like most of our yearly celebrations, it has ancient roots. The word was first used in the 16th Century but most scholars agree that the origins lie with the much older Celtic feast of Samhain. This harvest festival marked the end of summer and the beginning of the descent into winter.

The carving of pumpkins wasn’t a part of Halloween til much later. That part of the tradition evolved from the practice of carving turnips into lanterns as a way of remembering the dead. Many people think that lantern carving was an American contribution to Halloween, but that is not strictly true – the Americans added the pumpkins, but not the idea of carving. That was already well-established.

Trick or treating is still practiced in an older form in some parts of Scotland. When ‘guising’, children go door to door and earn sweets, money, or fruit by singing or telling a story. Sometimes they wear Halloween costumes but the focus is less on what is worn and more on the act. Poorer adults also used to receive food and money from their neighbours at this time of year, not with elaborate Halloween outfits but with prayers for the souls of the dead.

Although it began as one of the most sombre festivals in the annual calendar and is now one of the most light-hearted (the idea of a 70s fancy dress party is hard to reconcile with a 10th Century Samhain celebration) it still retains many elements from history. It’s certainly much more than an American tradition imported to keep children amused- as some people maintain- so celebrate Halloween and be proud!

There really is no better time for dressing up than Halloween. Themed fancy dress parties are always great fun and outfits are now more varied and elaborate then ever before.

Sexy Ladies Halloween Costumes

Sexy witches costumes are very much the order of the day when it comes to dressing up for Halloween. However, hedonistic devil costumes can also be naughty-but-nice. Other options include alluring Gothic Corpse Bride costumes or evil blood-stained nurse outfits. If you have a clear mission in mind for your Halloween party then you may find an evil seductress costume more fitting.

Couples Halloween Outfits

Costumes designed with couples in mind are always a great way to announce your presence at a party. Male and female Ghostbuster outfits are always a winner, as is the super-smooth Gomez and Morticia combo from the Addams Family. If you both want to look super-sexy then look no further than the blood-sucking Vampire and Vampira costumes.

Don’t worry if you’re just not built for scaring people; there are plenty of humorous costumes which you can wear that will ensure you still remain in the spirit of things. If you want to raise a laugh rather than someone’s heart rate then you can announce your arrival at the party by turning up in an oversized fat Dracula outfit or overweight transvestite devil outfit.

So, whether you are a sexy single lady, an evil-doing couple, or a fear-phobic joker, get your Halloween costume good and early from Fancy Dress Ball.

Halloween Fancy Dress Costume Details 0

As all fashion fans know, it’s the small details that make the outfit. That little maxim is just as true for Halloween outfits as it is for the suit you’d choose for an important meeting in the office, or for evening wear. Anyone can pick one of our great range of fancy dress costumes and show up to a halloween party looking good and ready for fun, but adding your own special touches shows you’ve put in that little bit of extra effort, and it’s great fun too.

The right cosmetics can take good Halloween outfits and make them great, and not just for the ladies. The 31st of October is the perfect time for men to have some fun with makeup too. Every vampire should be ghastly pale with pancake foundation and for zombies makeup is a must. Draw on your own horrible wounds or, better yet, choose from our range of realistic fake throat slashes and terrible stick-on scars.

Hair is also important. No Halloween fancy dress costume is complete without matching hairdo and often the hair is the way characters from movies and television are most easily recognised – Wednesday Addams would just be a rather conservatively dressed schoolgirl without the hair. The easiest (and usually the most visually effective) option is to go for a wig. Some of our outfits come with a wig included, but other times you can choose one from the wig section. We’ve also got a fantastic selection of fake beards and moustaches to add something special to your costume.

The History Behind Halloween Fancy Dress? 0

When the end of October begins to approach, many of us begin planning Halloween fancy dress. After all, any excuse to adopt a new look for the evening can be fun, particularly when friends are involved.

But how many of us know the roots of this tradition? Possibly, the answer to this question is not many. Halloween outfits are just one of those things in life that are not questioned – like putting decorations on Christmas trees and handing over presents when it comes to people’s birthdays.

Traditionally worn on the big day itself (October 31st) and the days surrounding it – depending on when the weekend falls – Halloween fancy dress is a practice that dates back to the early 1900s.

The celebration originates from a pagan tradition and it later became associated with the eve of the Christian observance of All Saints Day.

Screamer Ghost Costume

By the 1930s, fancy dress costumes were being mass produced by firms, reflecting the increasing popularity of the garments.

Both kids and adults adorn themselves in such items and, as well as social gatherings, they are used among younger people for trick or treating.

What sets such clothing apart from other fancy dress is the fact it is often ghostly or scary in nature and people tend to imitate supernatural or scary beings. Although, this is not always the case and there is also a market for other, less frightening clothes.

So, whether you opt for spooky get-up or another theme, next time you don fancy dress for Halloween you may feel more connected with the historical origins of the tradition.
