The festive season is well underway and people everywhere are planning their Santa costumes and Elf costumes ready for a proper seasonal party, but there is another proper party around the corner.
As we all know, it’s New Year’s Eve less than a week after Christmas Day, so if anything, it’s more of an opportunity to dress up for fun!
Whatever you’re planning, whether it is a house party or a night out on the town, your night is guaranteed to be improved with a fancy dress costume. It’s often difficult to decide exactly what to dress up as, so here is some inspiration to get you started:
Themed parties are always a winner, so why not go for the classic 80s costumes? The sexy Ghostbusters costume is bound to turn some heads, but make sure you keep dancing to keep warm in the cold, cold winter!
If we’re sticking with the 80s theme, the Rubik’s Cube costume will most certainly be a winner! Even if you’ve never completed one, you can still be a puzzle if you’re out on the pull…

Batman might have been the talk of the summer but there is one particular character that stood out once again in the superhero epic.
Catwoman has been around for almost as long as the Bat himself, first appearing in DC Comics in 1940 as, simply, the Cat. Selina Kyle, as she is also known, is the epitome of the sexy seductress of the comic book world and movie star Anne Hathaway has compounded that view even further with her sizzling performance as the antihero in The Dark Knight Rises this year.
IGN’s poll on the Top 100 Comic Book Villains of All Time cast Catwoman in at number 11, which is not to be scratched at. The loveable villain has been the star of many a comic and, indeed, many a TV show and movie.
Michelle Pfeiffer was the last actor to portray Catwoman in a Batman movie, namely in Batman Returns in 1992, gaining glowing reviews in the process. Halle Berry, on the other hand wasn’t so widely praised in her depiction of the character in 2004’s Catwoman.
Nevertheless, such has been the popularity of Hathaway’s performance this year, there is talk of another Catwoman movie in the pipeline with the American actor as the star, so get the superhero costumes at the ready and prepare for another instalment of the iconic and ever-popular Catwoman series!

September has rolled around again and no matter what age you are the month is always reminiscent of the trees turning brown, the skies turning grey and the scent of autumn looming.
Along with the change of the season, September marks the back to school rush. Everyone remembers the new stationary; pencils, pencil cases and fresh exercise books, a new lunch box and ruck sack and, above all, the oversized stiff new uniform you will grow into.
If you are holding a party in September for any reason, why not pay homage to the month and its meaning in years gone by, by making it fancy dress? More specifically, a back to school themed fancy dress.
You can get everything you need from Fancy Dress Ball, from school boy caps to full on school uniforms for girls. There are even accessories like shoes and wigs so you can really look the part.
Why not peruse some old photos of yourself and your friends from your school days and recreate the styles you thought were cool?!
Be careful though, you might not want to go too far back, you might discover some styles you thought you had forgotten about…

It might surprise you to hear that Wonder Woman has been around almost as long as the likes of Batman and Superman.
Indeed, she first appeared on the scene in 1941 in the famous All Star Comics, which now forms part of today’s DC Comics, and has since gone on to become one of the most famous and likeable of superheroes of comic book history.
Wonder Woman has enjoyed worldwide adoration since her inception in the middle of the Second World War and shot to even bigger fame when Lynda Carter brought her to life in the 1970s TV series.
She has not returned to our screens in human form since, but there have been many animated appearances from the world’s greatest ‘Amazon Demigod’.
The Trinity of Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman was party to a mini comic book series in 2003 from DC Comics. These three are considered the most iconic and recognisable superheroes of all time, not just of DC history.
The Wonder Woman costume is one of the most iconic ladies costumes of all time – just as iconic, perhaps, as Batman is when it comes to men’s fancy dress. In fact, just last year she came in at 5th in IGN’s ‘Top 100 Comic Book Heroes of All Time’.
That’s exactly why she remains just as popular today as she always has been.

Yep, you all guessed it – it’s Competwition time! With all the hype surrounding Batman and The Dark Knight Rises, the thrilling climax to the Christopher Nolan/Christian Bale trilogy, we thought it would only be fitting to launch our competitions to celebrate it!
So, for all the ladies out there, we’ve put a Batgirl costume and a sexy Robin costume up for grabs so you can really put Batman in his place! All the hype is around how cool the new Batman costume looks, but nothing compares to the sexiness of these two outfits.
Catwoman provides the inspiration for the most common female Batman-related costume, but these will really help you stand out from the crowd.
For the gents, what other costume would we put up for grabs than the Bane mask? Tom Hardy made a pretty big impact on the trilogy as bad-man Bane and thus created one of the coolest masks of all time.
So, if you want to instil terror (and jealousy) into every partygoer next time you’re out, be sure to enter yourself into the draw for this fearsome mask!

Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the last few months, you’ll be well aware that it’s the Diamond Jubilee of Her Majesty the Queen in less than a month!
A little over a year after the Royal Wedding celebrations, the British public will be hitting the streets in numbers with bunting to mark yet another historic event in British history. In the first week in June, the Queen will have occupied the throne for a remarkable 60 years and, what’s more, it will be marked with a double bank holiday – woohoo!
So you know what that means, Britain – it’s time to organise a party with your friends and family and get looking for some British fancy dress ideas to celebrate and congratulate the lady who has characterised the United Kingdom for the last six decades.
There is, of course, a huge party concert planned to take place at Buckingham Palace on 4th June to mark the special occasion. The BBC reported on the announcement of the line-up in February, with a star-studded bill set to wow the London crowds. Sir Paul McCartney, Dame Shirley Bassey and Sir Elton John are amongst the elite acts booked in to perform for Her Majesty the Queen.
If you don’t need to organise your own party because you’re lucky enough to be going to the celebratory concert, make sure you’re kitted out to look the part with some Jubilee fancy dress from @FancyDressBall!

Summer is nearly upon us – although they wouldn’t know it judging by the recent wet weather!
And it’s traditionally a time of the year when groups of friends throughout the UK embark on a good, old-fashioned pub crawl. It’s a chance to relax, have some fun, soak up some rays (hopefully) and gives people of all ages an excuse to get all decked out in fancy dress.
Here, we throw the spotlight on four of the most popular pub crawls in Britain, although of course here at Fancy Dress Ball we encourage responsible drinking so go steady on the loopy juice!
First up we head to lively Leeds for the Otley Run, which is a route that takes you from the student area of Headingley into the city centre and can include anything up to 20 different watering holes. If you need Otley Run fancy dress inspiration then how about slipping into a Scary Spice costume as a tribute to Leeds lass Mel B if you Wannabe noticed?
Trans-Pennine Real Ale Trail
This up-and-coming pub crawl involves travelling by train between Leeds and Manchester and stopping for refreshments at the establishments on or near eight of different stations that are all a short distance away from each other. The scenery is almost as spectacular as the quality of the ale on offer!
Monopoly pub crawl
Head around the streets of London as this family favourite board game is turned into a memorable day out enjoying a tipple or two. There are many variations to the Monopoly pub crawl so it can be tweaked to suit your needs. Just buy a Tube pass for the day, dig out an old Monopoly board complete with a dice and get exploring (and sipping).
Rose Street Challenge
Last, but by no means least, it’s off to Edinburgh for the Rose Street Challenge. Rose Street itself is in close proximity to the city’s famous Princes Street and is packed with a good mix of traditional pubs and bars. And what better way to get in the good books of the locals by donning a Morphsuit Scotland Flag outfit?
If you’re doing a pub crawl fancy dress in 2012 then tweet us a pic @fancydressball and we’ll share it with the world!

Quickly becoming one of the most talked about celebrities in the world, Kim Kardashian is one sizzling Red Riding Hood. This costume hit the red carpet at Heidi Klum’s 11th Annual Halloween Party in New York.

We couldn’t compile a list of extreme fancy dress costumes without including Lady Gaga, could we now? It’s difficult to pick the most eccentric costume from the wardrobe of the most eccentric person in the world, but her notorious meat dress seems to have generated more interest than any other, perhaps because of its supposed anti-fashion implications.

German-American model and TV personality Heidi Klum is one of the most prolific and impressive fancy dressers in showbiz. Her Annual Halloween Party is always a hit with the media, especially with extravagant costumes like this! This one made an appearance at the same party as Kim Kardashian’s Red Riding Hood above.

Ever the fun, bubbly and unpredictable character, it seems that Katy Perry was undecided who (or what) she wanted to be this night. She nailed the dual fancy dress on the head with this half girl, half boy costume – we can only speculate as to what happened when nature called…

Teri Hatcher paid homage to the timeless Queen of Hearts from Alice in Wonderland at this party. Looking every bit as elegant as you would expect, the Desperate Housewives and New Adventures of Superman actress really stole the show with this one!
